How to Open a Container
There are two ways to open a new container for a drug:
Through a Log Entry:
- When creating a log entry for the drug, select Open Container to open a new container
Through Inventory Management:
- Go to Manage Inventory click on Manage Containers
- Find the container and click View Details
- Select Edit, then change the Container Status from Unopened to Opened
Container Status Definitions
Unopened:
- The container is brand new, with its original cap/seal intact from the manufacturer
- It has not been used and remains in storage, possibly within a bulk package (e.g., buprenorphine vials in a box)
Opened:
- The container is actively in use in your practice
- The drug has been administered to patients, and log entries exist for this vial
- Finished:
- The container is empty and should be closed in LogButler to prevent further log entries
- To mark a container as finished:
- Go to Manage Containers in Manage Inventory
- Select the container and mark it as Finished
- Before finalizing, account for any hub loss or manufacturer discrepancies by making an adjustment
- Awaiting Disposal:
- This status is for containers that may have expired and are awaiting shipment to a reverse distributor. While this container is still physically in your hospital's possession, the status should be changed to "Awaiting Disposal"
