LogButler offers multiple ways to log both full or partial client level waste.

  •  To account for partial client waste:
    • You will enter the quantity given to the client, excluding waste, in the Quantity box.
    • The waste is the amount of medication not given to the client and should be separated from the total quantity and added to the Waste box.
    • Note that the quantity box added to the waste box equal the Total Quantity Removed From Containers (includes waste) box.
    • For example, if you remove 1 ml from the container, but the client is only given 0.7 ml, you will waste 0.3ml. Therefore, you will enter 0.7 ml in the quantity box and 0.3 ml in the waste box for a total of 1 ml removed from the container.

  • To account for full client waste:
    • If the entire amount drawn for a client was not administered to the client, you will enter the full quantity removed from the container in the Quantity box. Leave the waste box empty and save the log entry as your normally would.
    • Locate this log entry in the Pending tab of the Reconcile window.
    • Select View Details and select the Waste Log button.
    • This will convert this to a waste entry in your log book and will retain all of the client information.

  • We do not recommend using the Waste box for hub loss on a patient level. There is not a definite way to determine the exact amount of hub loss. A variety of factors are involved, including the size of the needle, the number of times a vial has been punctured, manufacturer differences, etc.
